I know it stands for the masculine, but what else?
Mars is energy that is released by the Sun which is to be used in creative action and physical manifestation. Thats my take. It symbolizes sex impulse, the creative motivation of all life. This energy is often misused in sex for conquest or for pleasure instead of the healing and procreative role that it was destined for. Don’t forget that when you study Mars, you have to study Aries and wherever Aries is found in the chart, regardless of the house, Mars will rule that department of life. This is where the individual will be involved with direct action and concerned with the immediate now requiring decision-making. Also, the placement in Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable signs will indicate how the impulse is expressed and what motivates this energy.
The sign (element) will indicates through what kind of expression the individual will take action. Mars will be colored by the traits of the sign it is in.
Finally, the house will show the areas of life in which the individual expresses actions and desires. It indicates the area where he/she must exert energy and initiative to achieve results. It also indicates the area that could be connected with conflict. The constructive or destructive use of this energy will be in the area of experience where Mars is found. The aspects made to Mars indicate the degree of harmony or disharmony and the positive or negative results from the action of Mars. Thats it in a nutshell more or less :)
