Also known as the Triplicities
Astrology and its interpretation is built up in a series of layers. The elements form the foundation layer. When looking to interpret or understand the make-up of a birthchart, the elements play an important role in determining the basic character type and the general approach to life. Whichever element dominates by the planetary placements describes the general temperament or disposition. This is the foundation on which to build up the full picture.
The elements are also known as the triplicities, as there are three signs belonging to each and it is between signs of the same element or triplicity that the easy-flowing TRINE aspect comes from. The reason for this is that those signs have a likeness in basic character.
S. Arroyo gave Elements karmic significance: For example, if you have an affliction in the three water signs, working on emotions will be your karmic task:
“The four elements reveal the actual levels of energy and dimensions of life that the individual can immediately experience, then the element of any sign that contains one or more of these highly charged, powerfully stressed planets is inevitably a dimension of life where there is a need for adjustment. The elements where we find such planets shows what kind of attachments and desires are strongest for us, what one of the major purposes of this lifetime is, and what areas of life continue to cause us problems and are thus in need of transformation.”
These are the words I give for each element:
Energetic, passionate, intense
Intellectual, rational, communicative
Sensitive, deep, emotional
Strength, endurance, security
What about you?
Water, Air, Earth, and Fire are the four elements that are a composite of your life. You depend on these elements daily to sustain you. Because the natural elements are so important, Carl Gustav Jung developed a system that relates the four elements to human psyche. Water is the element of feelings and emotions, and feelings and emotions tend to rise to the surface sometimes, uncontrolled. If you have a lot earth element, then you are all about practicality. Earth people are grounded and solid. Big and brash, passionate and dramatic, fire people do everything straight from the heart. Fire is the element of energy and vitality. Individuals whose dominant element is air are brilliant, curious, independent, entertaining, impractical, and restless. Read Debra’s interpretation of each element to see which emphasis of an element is in your personality.
